This past Friday, the Magic: The Gathering subreddit started getting flooded with similar posts. People were supposedly getting letters in the mail from Wizards of the Coast. Included with these letters were packs dubbed as “ultimate box toppers”. When people opened these packs, well... see for yourself.
People realized that these packages contained never before seen versions of incredible cards. They were indicated to be part of “UMA” as their set code, and it looks like there are 40 of them, based on the collectors numbers. We don’t know all 40 yet, but so far the list has been pretty ridiculous. As of the writing of this article, here are the ones we’ve learned about so far.
That’s a pretty crazy list, and there’s still more to come. The lucky few that received these monster cards were those that tried to order Guilds of Ravnica: Mythic Edition booster boxes, but didn’t get their order processed. It’s hard to say that this isn’t great PR for Wizards, since they’re both righting a past wrong, and generating hype for what these cards are for.
So what the hell are they for?
No one really knows yet, so everything is rampant speculation so far. Them being touted as box toppers suggests that they’ll be some sort of inclusion with the purchase of a Booster Box. It’s hard to know which, since the listed set is UMA. That could suggest an “Ultimate Masters” set coming soon. We do know that we won’t be waiting long though. Wizards is set to announce more details about these mystery cards on Monday, November 5th.
One things for sure though, this has definitely generated some hype!
